An expansion pack called Lord of Destruction adds a fifth "Act" and two new character classes: Assassin and Druid. Only the Barbarian class is available in the shareware version. Another addition to Diablo II is the ability to add computer-controlled Rogue archers to your party. The dungeons are still randomly generated, which is good for the game's replay value.
Unlike the original Diablo, which took place entirely within one location, the hero can travel across a vast world with many dungeons, activating teleports in order to move between the camp and the levels. The Rogues fear that Diablo has been resurrected and ask the hero to help them recapture the lands that have been overrun by demonic monsters. The game begins in the Rogue Encampment, where a group of female warriors have been driven out of Tristam. Players can also choose to increase the level of an existing ability or add a new ability.
Regardless of class, players can customize their character by assigning point to the character's various attributes when the character gains a level. Some weapons and armor now have sockets that gemstones can be affixed to in order to attach elemental attacks to weapons or elemental defense to armor. Characters can equip weapons and armor if they meet the minimum attribute requirements, such as strength and dexterity. The five character classes are Amazon, Necromancer, Barbarian, Sorceress, and Paladin. Magic spells have been replaced by Abilities, which are available based on the character's class. RPG elements include character classes, hit points and mana (magic points), experience points and level promotion, gold, potions, and equippable weapons and armor. Diablo II plays like an action game, with battles that take place in real time (not turn based), and enemies are visible in the dungeon (no surprise attacks).
